Saving Forests and Lives

More than two decades ago, ASRI Founder, Dr. Kinari Webb, heard from communities around Gunung Palung National Park that many were forced to cut down trees to pay for medical treatment. This was due to the difficulty of accessing quality health services and the need to travel long distances for treatment. ASRI is here to answer the community's need for health services. With the establishment of the ASRI Clinic, ASRI Foundation seeks to provide quality and affordable healthcare for all community members, so that people no longer have to choose between their health and cutting down trees in the forest. We believe that humans cannot be healthy without a healthy nature. Nature will not be healthy without healthy people.

Mobile Medicine

Although the situation is getting better from time to time, the difficulty of accessing health services is a situation that is still felt by some people in remote areas of Kalimantan. Using cars and boats, ASRI visited communities around Gunung Palung National Park and Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park to help provide health services for forest communities.

TB countermeasures

ASRI implements the DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course) strategy which aims to support the government program in eradicating pulmonary TB, as well as leprosy. The high incidence of pulmonary TB and leprosy around ASRI's working area encourages ASRI's collaboration with the Health Office. ASRI is committed to training and assigning Drug Swallowing Supervisors (PMOs) scattered in the hamlets around TNGP to help pulmonary TB and leprosy patients not to stop eating medicine, while the Health Office and Puskesmas provide drugs and contribute to PMO operations. PMOs are tasked with supervising patients to take medicine regularly, ensuring the availability of drugs for patients, and educating the community about pulmonary TB and leprosy. In one year, ASRI's PMOs can serve up to 100 pulmonary TB patients and dozens of leprosy patients. ASRI's achievements until the end of 2019 have been successful, with a dropout rate of less than 5%, far below the national average (above 11%).

Glasses

ASRI Clinic realizes that access to eyeglasses is still very limited in the ASRI working area. To get corrective glasses (minus, cylinder, etc.), people in North Kayong Regency have to go to Ketapang which is 2 hours away considering there is no optical shop in North Kayong. To improve services, since 2019, ASRI has collaborated with the world's leading eyeglass lens company, Essilor - 2.5 NVG to provide affordable glasses to the community. ASRI is actively involved in the distribution of glasses, the sale of reading glasses and sunglasses, and has sent two young people from North Kayong to study at the Refractive Optician Academy in Jakarta with support from Essilor.
