Strengthening Community Capacity for Forest Conservation and Climate Action through Forest Guardian

On Monday, May 25, 2026, ASRI organized the Bi-Monthly Sahabat Hutan (Forest Guardian) Meeting at the ASRI Clinic. Held from 08:00 AM to 03:30 PM WIB, the event served as a platform for evaluation, learning, and program planning for Sahabat Hutan members, who act as conservation partners at the village hamlet level. The meeting was attended by 19 Forest Guardian members, 7 ASRI staff members, and 2 resource persons from Gunung Palung National Park Authority (BTNGP/Balai TANAGUPA). This year, The Forest Guardian Program and this meeting were supported by YAPPIKA, which is committed to strengthening community-based capacity in protecting and conserving forests. Through this support, Sahabat Hutan members continue to enhance their role and capabilities as local conservation partners contributing to forest protection and sustainable community development.

The Strategic Role of Sahabat Hutan

The Forest Guardian Program is one of ASRI Foundation’s initiatives to strengthen community participation in protecting the Gunung Palung National Park (GPNP) area. Through this program, Forest Guardian members help disseminate ASRI’s conservation programs to local communities and facilitate effective communication between ASRI and residents at the hamlet level. In addition, they actively participate in various conservation and healthcare activities implemented by ASRI within their respective communities.

Program Evaluation and Planning

One of the primary objectives of this bi-monthly meeting was to evaluate activities carried out over the previous two months. During the evaluation session, participants shared experiences, presented achievements, and discussed challenges encountered while carrying out their responsibilities in the field.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to identify the unique potential of each hamlet and develop activity targets for the upcoming two months. Through structured evaluation and planning, Forest Guardian members are expected to play an even more effective role in supporting conservation efforts and community empowerment initiatives.

Enhancing Understanding of Climate Change

The first session focused on climate change. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the concept of climate change, its impacts on the environment and local communities, and the challenges posed by the climate crisis. Through interactive discussions, Forest Guardian members explored how climate change affects their surrounding environment and learned how communities can contribute to both climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Introduction to Climate Justice Defenders (CJD)

The next session introduced participants to the concept of Climate Justice Defenders (CJD), presented by M. Rusda Yakin, ASRI’s Conservation and Livelihood Manager. This session provided insights into climate justice principles, the role of climate justice advocates, and the challenges they face in defending the rights of communities affected by climate change.

The lively discussion reflected participants’ enthusiasm for understanding the connection between environmental conservation, climate change, and community well-being.

Basic Smart Patrol Training

As part of efforts to strengthen the capacity of Forest Guardian members, BTNGP delivered a basic training session on the Smart Patrol application. The training covered an introduction to the application, guidance on downloading and using its features, and practical field exercises.

Through this training, participants were equipped with the skills needed to systematically document and report field observations more effectively. The use of technologies such as Smart Patrol is expected to support faster and more accurate conservation data management.

Key Outcomes

The bi-monthly meeting achieved several important outcomes, including:

  1. Increased knowledge and understanding among Forest Guardian members regarding the impacts of climate change.
  2. Improved awareness of the Climate Justice Defenders (CJD) concept and its role in promoting climate justice.
  3. Enhanced capacity of Forest Guardian members to use the Smart Patrol application effectively.

A Shared Commitment to Conservation

The Forest Guardian Program continues to play a vital role in supporting ASRI Foundation’s activities at the hamlet level. In addition to serving as partners in conservation and healthcare initiatives, Forest Guardian members act as important communication bridges between local communities and ASRI.

Through regular meetings such as this, the capacity, knowledge, and motivation of Forest Guardian members are continuously strengthened, enabling them to serve as front-line guardians of forest conservation while fostering greater environmental awareness and climate action within their communities.
