Launch of the Inventory and Patrol Guidelines for Conservation Areas by the Southwest Papua KSDAE Regional Office

Jakarta, March 31, 2026 – Yayasan Alam Sehat Lestari participated in the Launch of the Inventory and Patrol Guidelines Book for the Southwest Papua KSDAE Regional Office, held at the Directorate General of KSDAE Meeting Room, Manggala Wanabhakti Building, Central Jakarta. The event was organized by the Southwest Papua KSDAE Regional Office in collaboration with conservation partners, including Fauna & Flora, WWF Indonesia, and Yayasan Alam Sehat Lestari (ASRI). Approximately 25–30 participants attended, representing the Directorate General of KSDAE, the Southwest Papua KSDAE Office, and conservation partners.

Promoting Data-Driven Protected Area Management

The launch of this guideline book is part of efforts to strengthen conservation area management through a more systematic, standardized, and data-driven approach. The book serves as a technical reference for biodiversity inventory and patrol activities and is expected to support the enhancement of the Decision Support System (DSS) in conservation management.

In his remarks, the Director General of KSDAE emphasized that inventory and patrol activities play a strategic role as the foundation for biodiversity protection and effective, sustainable conservation area management.

Collaboration Between Government and Conservation Partners

The book launch was conducted symbolically, followed by a presentation of its contents by the Head of the Southwest Papua KSDAE Office. The book includes inventory methodologies, patrol standard operating procedures, as well as integrated reporting and data documentation systems.

Representatives from conservation partners—Fauna & Flora, Yayasan ASRI, and WWF Indonesia—also expressed their commitment and program support for collaborative implementation of inventory and patrol activities in conservation areas.

This collaboration is key to addressing challenges related to limited data availability and the vast scale of conservation areas, particularly in Southwest Papua, which holds exceptionally high biodiversity value.

Addressing Data and Conservation Challenges

During the discussion, it was highlighted that the current coverage of inventory data remains very limited. Out of approximately 19,000 grid areas, only about 2.4% have been documented, while 97.6% remain unrecorded. Through this guideline, inventory and patrol processes are expected to become more targeted, efficient, and priority-based.

Southwest Papua itself possesses rich ecosystems, with 27 conservation areas covering 20 ecosystem types, as well as intact forest landscapes that remain well preserved, including the South Tambrauw Nature Reserve, one of the largest in the region.

Contribution to Indonesia Emas 2045

Strengthening biodiversity inventory efforts contributes not only to ecosystem protection but also supports various aspects of development, including research and education, cultural preservation, and the development of sustainable natural resource-based economies. This aligns with the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045.

Commitments and Follow-Up Actions

The launch of this guideline resulted in several follow-up commitments, including the implementation of the guideline over the next five years, validation of biodiversity data including IUCN data, and strengthened coordination between the government and partners in conducting inventory and patrol activities.

Closing

The launch event proceeded smoothly and received strong support from various stakeholders. The Inventory and Patrol Guidelines Book is expected to be an important step toward achieving more effective, science-based, and sustainable management of conservation areas.
